Maharashtra Launches Underground Data Centers in Caves

The state government has partnered with private firms to repurpose abandoned mining caves near Nagpur into underground data centers. These naturally cooled, thermally stable environments reduce energy costs associated with digital infrastructure. Fiber optic cables and backup solar grids are installed. The pilot data center hosts cloud services for local e-governance and disaster recovery. Nagpur’s cool subterranean temperatures cut air-conditioning costs by up to 50%. The state is studying expansion possibilities in other rock-cut zones.
