Madhya Pradesh’s Agriculture Department has delivered solar-powered irrigation pumps to smallholder farmers in Vidisha and Chhatarpur districts to reduce dependence on diesel and unreliable grid supply. Each pump operates on photovoltaic panels, drawing water from borewells or wells for drip irrigation systems. Initial field reports show 35% savings in water use and 60% cut in energy costs. Farmers also gain autonomy as subsidies cover 70% of the equipment cost under the PM-KUSUM scheme. The solar pumps are linked to mobile apps delivering pump operation metrics, energy output, and maintenance reminders. The state plans full deployment of 10,000 units in the next two years with evaluations underway for scaling across all regions.
